Therapy: style and theoretical orientation
My psychotherapy practice includes care and treatment of individuals, couples, families, and groups. While I specialize in eating disorders, I have expertise in the following areas of treatment: Depression, Communication problems in Couples, Low Self-Esteem, Substance Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Orientation Issues, and Gender Identity Issues. My use of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy, combined with an art therapy/expressive arts approach, encourages the development of the individual’s unique path to change. I base my practice on strengthening the individual and her/his support system to embrace change in the way that feels most natural and authentic.
In my use of these therapies, my greatest concern is to understand and respect the needs of the client. I work collaboratively so that together we can arrive at the therapeutic goals.
Payment:
Please note that while I do not accept health insurance, I frequently provide end of the month billing statements for my clients; clients submit these to their insurance companies and they may later receive reimbursement. Payments are accepted in the form of personal checks or cash.
Eating Disorder Treatment:
The style of my work incorporates both Psycho-dynamic and Cognitive Behavioral techniques. By raising awareness of unconscious behaviors, feelings, and motivations, the source of the eating disorder can best be revealed, creating space for change and personal growth. The cognitive behavioral techniques aid in providing choices and alternatives to dysfunctional eating disordered behaviors. I facilitate this type of work through traditional talk-therapy as well as art and expressive arts techniques. I work dynamically as a team with my clients’ other healthcare providers when treating eating disorders.
I have been treating eating disorders in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. I worked with teens, men, women, couples, and families at Ohlhoff Recovery Programs in the eating disorders intensive outpatient program and Continued Care Program for four years.
In 1996 I implemented the first eating disorders group at West Side Lodge Adult Outpatient Treatment. I later developed a dual diagnosis eating disorders/chemical dependency process group for female adult clients at Women’s Recovery Association in 2000. I’ve worked with teens struggling with eating disorders in my private practice and at Daly City Youth Health Center, and I instituted eating disorder process groups for female teens at Jefferson High School. Part of my practice includes eating disorders recovery training for doctors, dentists, and masters/PhD level therapists-in-training at Bay Area offices and universities.
